100 Greatest Discoveries For most of human history, the only light we knew came from the sky. By day, the sun. By night, an uncountable number of stars. From the beginning, our ancestors believed that the sun and the stars were heavenly - out of this world - and they were right. We've been watching the sky for thousands of years, but until recently we couldn't see well enough to understand our connection to the cosmos. 2007 521
A Graphic Guide To The Heavens (Part 1) To the earliest observers, the cosmos was the realm of the gods. They controlled day and night, the passage of the sun and moon. So too the constellations, and those wandering stars we know today as planets. Great monuments honored the gods, but they had a practical function: They were the first observatories, marking the rising and setting of the sun, the moon and the stars. A celestial calendar with which the acients could measure the seasons and predict events. Thus was born astronomy. 2008 317

Apollo 11: The Untold Story When Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon in July 1969, Apollo 11 was hailed as the supreme triumph of American technology. But behind the flag waving lies a very different story: the untold account of how close the mission came to disaster. Now, nearly forty years later, men on that mission reveal what really happened on the first voyage to the moon. It's a tale of how primitive computer technology, coupled with human errors and mechanical failures, nearly caused the tragic loss of the crew. 2006 177
Are We Alone In The Universe? For fifty years, the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence has been scanning the galaxy for a message from an alien civilisation. So far to no avail, but a recent breakthrough suggests they may one day succeed. Horizon joins the planet hunters who've discovered a new world called Gliese 581 c. It is the most Earth-like planet yet found around another star and may have habitats capable of supporting life. NASA too hopes to find fifty more Earth-like planets by the end of the decade, all of which dramatically increases the chance that alien life has begun elsewhere in the galaxy. 2008 201
Are We Alone? We've all grown up wondering, if we are alone in the universe. What if one day, we come face to face with an alien? This is the story of our search for extraterrestrials. Does ET really exist? This is a documentary presented by Sam Neill. Sam Neill 2008 165
Black Holes Humanity, ignorant in bliss. We go about our lives unaware, that in the depths of space lurk invisible monsters. Destroyers powerful enough to tear apart our sun, and leave our earth shattered. This is a documentary presented by Sam Neill. Sam Neill 2007 172
Black Holes: The Other Side of Infinity There are places where gravity is so powerful nothing can escape, where time and space literally crash into the abyss. Can you feel the pull? Narrated by Liam Neeson History Channel 2008 158
Challenger, Go For Launch Shuttle Challenger left Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Flight Center. Seventy-three seconds into flight, the Orbiter Challenger exploded, killing all seven of its crew. The cause of the accident was due to the cold-related failure of the aft joint seal in the right Solid Rocket Booster. It was the worst accident in the history of the United States space program and rocked NASA to its core. 2007 237
Exploring Space: The Quest For Life This film takes a great comprehensive look at space travel, life on other planets, and the origins of life on Earth. It does a great job of exploring such topics as Pasteur's experiments with wine barrels, the origins of life on earth, recent discoveries of life in expected places on earth, dust from comets, Jupiter's moon Europa, human's endurance in space, terraforming prospects on Mars, the requirements of a mission to Mars. It's strength is the effective way it illustrates very complicated concepts using great interviews, interesting comparisons, and good visual effects. Unlike other documentaries of this type, this one goes into greater depth with various concepts and ideas. 2006 139
Hubble - 15 Years Of Discovery As an observatory in space, Hubble is one of the most successful scientific projects of all time, both in terms of scientific output and its immediate public appeal. Hubble continues to have an enormous impact by exploiting a unique scientific niche where no other instruments can compete. It consistently delivers super-sharp images and clean, uncontaminated spectra over the entire near-infrared and ultraviolet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. This has opened up new scientific territory and resulted in many paradigm-breaking discoveries. 2005 143
Jupiter, The Giant Planet We journey half a billion miles from the earth’s surface to a mini solar system of over 60 moons rotating around a powerful planet of gas. Its flowing colours and spots hold strange beauty, but contain violent storms and jet streams. Could this big, bright ball of turbulent weather have been the star of Bethlehem? Could one of its moons harbour life beneath its icy crust? Jupiter, the giant planet, is the king of many questions concerning our solar system and could possibly hold the answers. 2007 145
Mars: The Red Planet This series takes a fascinating new look at a very old universe. Fifty years after man first ventured into outer space, we examine the greatest secrets of the heavens. Each episode outlines how humans have explored the universe, and scrutinises the discoveries they have made. We look at hi-tech space telescopes which record the violent birth of stars, robotic rovers which glimpse the red surface of Mars, and sophisticated NASA probes which delve into the mysterious make-up of comets. As the earth churns ominously with the effects of global warming, this is a revealing and prescient journey into the heavens. From the planets to the stars and out to the edge of the unknown, history and science collide in this epic exploration of the Universe and its mysteries. In Mars: The Red Planet, we investigate the nature and composition of the planet in our solar system that shares the most similarities with Earth. Despite otherworldly features - such as the largest volcano in the Solar System - the red planet had much in common with our own one. Rumours of life on Mars may be substantiated as NASA orbiters and rovers discover new evidence of frozen water just beneath the rusty soil. Did alien life exist there? As Earth reels with the effects of global warming, Mars becomes the most likely candidate for eventual human habitation. Cutting-edge computer graphics are used to show what life would be like on Mars, and to imagine what kind of life forms might evolve in alien atmospheres. History Channel 2007 191
Search for E.T. It is the question that has kept many people awake at night, staring at the stars, pondering the possibilities: In a galaxy filled with a billion stars, in a universe filled with a hundred billion galaxies - are we alone? History Channel 2007 137
Space Tourists Over 40 years ago man first went into space. Ever since ordinary people have dreamt of getting there themselves. But after several false starts, a group of space obsessed entrepreneurs believe the first commercial flights into the final frontier are only a few years away. The concept of space tourism is not new. Following the enormous achievements made by the Americans and Russians during the 1960s many of us assumed that it was only a matter of time before it was the turn of tourists. 2008 132

A War on Science When Charles Darwin published his theory of evolution nearly 150 years ago, he shattered the dominant belief of his day – that humans were the product of divine creation. Through his observations of nature, Darwin proposed the theory of evolution by natural selection. This caused uproar. After all, if the story of creation could be doubted, so too could the existence of the creator. Ever since its proposal, this cornerstone of biology has sustained wave after wave of attack. Now some scientists fear it is facing the most formidable challenge yet: a controversial new theory called intelligent design. In the late 1980s Phillip Johnson, a renowned lawyer and born-again Christian, began to develop a strategy to challenge Darwin. To Johnson, the evidence for natural selection was poor. He also believed that by explaining the world only through material processes was inherently atheistic. If there was a god, science would never be able to discover it. Johnson recruited other Darwin doubters, including biochemist Professor Michael Behe, mathematician Dr William Dembski, and philosopher of science Dr Stephen Meyer. These scientists developed the theory of intelligent design (ID) which claims that certain features of the natural world are best explained as the result of an intelligent being. To him, the presence of miniature machines and digital information found in living cells are evidence of a supernatural creator. Throughout the 90s, the ID movement took to disseminating articles, books and DVDs and organising conferences all over the world. 2008 124
DNA: Curing Cancer A half-century ago, two unknown scientists heralded the dawning of a new era in biology and human life as they entered an English pub! Of course, Jim Watson and Francis Crick were hardly exaggerating. Their achievements almost single-handedly launched the new science of DNA. Interviews with renowned scientists and stunningly realized animations and reconstructions of key experiments offer an unprecedented glimpse of the molecular basis of life. Episode 4: Curing Cancer Bud Romine was diagnosed with incurable cancer in 1994. He was given three years to live. In 1996, a newspaper article caught his eye. The article described the work of a local doctor, Brian Druker, who was testing a new kind of cancer drug. In 1997, months away from death, Bud Romine became the first patient ever to take Gleevec. Within 17 days, Bud had returned to perfect health. Indeed, the drug seems to cure everyone with Bud’s disease — Chronic Myeloid Leukemia — by fixing the DNA that causes it. Today, the prospect of more drugs that work at the level of DNA is a real one. In 1990, Gleevec was the only one in development. There are currently hundreds of drugs in development that might work in the same revolutionary way on different kinds of cancer. The final work for the DNA scientists is identifying all the damaged genes that cause cancer. But with the Human Genome Project finished, a single lab will be able to do this in just five years. Fifty years after Crick and Watson discovered the double helix, the secret of life may finally be living up to its name. Carlo Massarella 2003 129
DNA: Human Race A half-century ago, two unknown scientists heralded the dawning of a new era in biology and human life as they entered an English pub! Episode 3: Human Race In the 1990s, the race to work out the structure of DNA fifty years ago was eclipsed by another race: to catalog all the genes in the human genome. The rivalry became so bitter that presidents and prime ministers had to intervene in a epic endeavour that would take over a decade to complete ans cost billions of dollars. The story begins in 1990, when the Human Genome Project was launched to decipher the complete instruction manual of the human being. This epic endeavour took over a decade to complete and cost billions of dollars. Eight years after its launch, a rival private bid was announced in an attempt to shut the public project down. A personal feud erupted between Craig Venter, who ran Celera’s privately funded Genome Project, and Sir John Sulston, who oversaw Britain’s share of the public Human Genome Project. Craig Venter believed he could finish the Human Genome several years before the public project. The fighting became so intense that President Clinton stepped in to try to unite the two sides. Clinton asked a go-between to sort out the two warring groups. Over pizza and beer in a basement, the two sides agreed to a cease-fire. They would announce their draft results — together — in a joint celebration hosted by The White House in June 2000. 2003 156
DNA: Pandora's Box A half-century ago, two unknown scientists heralded the dawning of a new era in biology and human life as they entered an English pub! Episode 5: Pandora’s Box We asked Jim Watson to give us a tour of the future. He believes DNA science should be used to change the human race. His views are both extraordinary and extremely controversial. Watson argues for a new kind of eugenics — where parents are allowed to choose the DNA of their children — to make them healthier, more intelligent, even better looking. His vision may be disagreeable, yet it’s a natural consequence of the decades of scientific exploration launched by his and Francis Crick’s discovery of the double helix. It’s worth considering what effect the advancements in genetic science may have on our future. 2003 180
DNA: Playing God A half-century ago, two unknown scientists heralded the dawning of a new era in biology and human life as they entered an English pub! Episode 2: Playing God In 1973, two scientists undertook an experiment that rocked the world. By transferring the DNA from one species to another, Herb Boyer and Stan Cohen became the first Genetic Engineers. Their experiment triggered a wave of controversy about the dangers of genetic manipulation, but it also generated a multi billion dollar industry. Biotechnology would soon transform the pharmaceutical industry and genetically modified food was to herald the biggest revolution in agriculture since the industrialization of farming. Yet the public was skeptical, and so were certain scientists. Some feared that a cancer-causing gene stitched into the DNA of a bacterium might be accidentally absorbed in the human gut, enabling cancer to be passed on like an infectious disease. Biologists from all over the world were called to a meeting in California to draw up a strict set of safety guidelines. When the panic subsided the stage was set for a biotechnology bonanza. A race began to produce genetically engineered insulin. A couple of years later a young researcher called Rob Horsch, who worked for the chemical giant Monsanto, produced the first genetically engineered plant. The biotech revolutions had arrived. 2003 153
DNA: The Secret of Life Their achievements almost single-handedly launched the new science of DNA. Interviews with renowned scientists and stunningly realized animations and reconstructions of key experiments offer an unprecedented glimpse of the molecular basis of life. Episode 1: The Secret of Life The discovery of the double helix structure of DNA is to science what the Mona Lisa is to painting. It’s been called the single biggest discovery of all time. But it wasn’t just stumbled upon – it was a race. Specifically, it was a race between two teams of young scientists working in Britain, as well as the esteemed chemist Linus Pauling, based in California. Already a Nobel laureate, Pauling may have been the favorite, but the discovery would ultimately be made by his British counterparts. Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins were trying to identify the structure by studying X-ray diffractions of the DNA molecule. But Jim Watson and Francis Crick studied a little bit of everything — including, to the consternation of some, the work of their competitors. A few have gone so far as to accuse Watson of stealing Franklin’s X-ray work. In any case, Waston and Crick’s inquisitive working style ultimately allowed them to determine the DNA structure first, in 1953 — an achievement that led to their Nobel Prize in 1962. Meanwhile, Franklin passed away in 1958 from cancer. 2003 146
Do You Want to Live Forever? “Do You Want To Live Forever?” is a Channel 4 Documentary following the revolutionary life-extension and immortality ideas of this somewhat eccentric scientist, Dr. Aubrey de Grey. This show is all about the radical ideas of a Cambridge biomedical gerontologist called Aubrey de Grey who believes that, within the next 20-30 years, we could extend life indefinitely by addressing seven major factors in the aging process. He describes his work as Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence (SENS). 2007 126
Earth: The Climate Wars – Battle Begins In the 1970s the world seemed to be falling apart. From acid rain to overpopulation, ecological concerns were at the fore. And it was at this time that climate change first became a hot political issue. But it wasn’t global warming that frightened scientists, it was the complete opposite: a new ice age. Dr Iain Stewart traces the history of climate change from its very beginning and examines just how the scientific community managed to get it so very wrong back in the Seventies. Along the way he uncovers some of the great unsung heroes of climate change science, and introduces us to a secret organisation of American government scientists, known as Jason, who wrote the first official report on global warming as far back as 1979. He shows how – by the late 1980s – global warming had already become a serious political issue. It looked as if the world was uniting to take action. But it turned out to be a false dawn – in the 1990s global warming would be transformed into one of the biggest scientific controversies of our age. 2008 105
Earth: The Climate Wars – Fight for the Future Having explained the science behind global warming, and addressed the arguments of the climate change sceptics earlier in the series. In this third and final part Dr Iain Stewart looks at the biggest challenge now facing climate scientists. Just how can they predict exactly what changes global warming will bring? It’s a journey that takes him from early attempts to model the climate system with dishpans, to supercomputers, and to the frontline of climate research today: Greenland. Most worryingly, he discovers that scientists are becoming increasingly concerned that their models are actually underestimating the speed of changes already under way. 2008 107
Earth: The Climate Wars – Fightback Dr Iain Stewart investigates the counter-attack launched by global warming sceptics in the 1990s. At the start of the 1990s it seemed the world was united. At the Rio Earth Summit the world signed up to a programme of action to start tackling climate change. Even George Bush was there. But the consensus didn’t last. Iain examines the scientific arguments that developed as the global warming sceptics took on the climate change consensus. The sceptics attacked almost everything that scientists held to be true. They argued that the planet wasn’t warming up, that even if it was it was nothing unusual, and certainly whatever was happening to the climate was nothing to do with human emissions of greenhouse gases. 2008 92
Global Warming or Global Governance? Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth allegedly provides incontrovertible evidence that this is the case. President Obama are committed to passing economically devastating legislation that will do little to nothing to stop global warming. Contrary to what is heard in the media, however, there is overwhelming evidence that the warming we are experiencing is natural, with maybe a small amount contributed by man’s activities. Nor is there any scientific consensus. 31,000 scientists have signed a petition stating there is “no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide is causing…catastrophic” warming. The debate is still raging within the scientific community. In this DVD, Sovereignty International has put together interviews of respected climate scientists and biologists from numerous sources who explain, step by step, why Al Gore and the global warming alarmists are incorrect. In some cases, blatantly so. 2007 102
Human Senses – Hearing and Balance Sound can have a very powerful effect on how we feel about the world. This episode embarks on a quest to track down the sounds which have the most powerful emotional effects on us, and to understand why. Our sense of hearing is the one sense that never sleeps. It evolved to protect us from ambush at night. At the Sleep Laboratory in Swansea, Dr Mark Blagrove plays sounds to sleeping volunteers and finds that although they can shut out sounds when asleep, their sense of hearing is constantly alert. Another sound we respond to strongly is the human voice. Dr Sarah Collins, a behavioural expert at Nottingham University, studies the effect sexy voices have on people and explains why deep voices are so attractive to the opposite sex. But sounds are far more than just sex and danger. Music has extraordinary power to manipulate our emotions and the most basic feature of all music is rhythm. Scientists believe we have certain automatic responses to rhythmic sounds, because many of our basic body processes work to a beat – the heart pumping or the legs and arms moving as we walk. We travel to Hawaii to meet an animal which might help unravel why music has such a powerful effect on us. Once a year, hundreds of humpback whales meet up to sing their hearts out.We discover that the mating male whales sing because it’s the best way to convey simple emotions to other males like ‘back off’ or ‘you’re my friend’. And for us music is all about conveying emotions. In search of the ultimate high, there may be another even more powerful way that sounds can affect us. Back in England, we observe enthusiastic Status Quo fans who are clearly entranced by the very loud music, and discovers why it may be the volume of the music rather than the timeless Status Quo songs that really gets the audience going. Balance is our true sixth sense; it enables us to sense how our bodies are moving around in the world and keep us upright. There are only two kinds of animal that spend their whole lives performing the tricky balancing act of walking on two legs – humans and some flightless birds, like ostriches. Balancing can be a deceptively complex business. Stunt co-ordinator Marc Cass takes us for a dramatic drive, to demonstrate how the balance organs let us know how we’re being yanked around, and even turned upside down. For really fine balance, we need our eyes to help us work out exactly what the body is doing in relation to the outside world. 2003 127
Human Senses – Smell This episode goes in search of the most disgusting and the most attractive smells, and attempts to discover the basic biological reasons for this. A visit to Albuquerque reveals the powers of one of nature’s worst smells… Hidden cameras observe the effect skunk smell has on a crowded shopping mall. Not everyone is disgusted by skunk odour – some people seem unaffected. At the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia scientists have been developing the world’s first universally repellent smell, so utterly disgusting it could be used for crowd control. To discover the biological reasons why we find some smells so unpleasant, we travel to the African savannah, where a carcass has been rotting in the warm sun for two weeks. Our sense of smell has evolved to warn us off eating bacteria infested meat like this, which would almost certainly kill us, unlike scavengers like hyenas who aren’t affected. In the course of their research at Monell, scientists tested the worst, naturally occurring smells that people found most offensive and discovered big differences in how people react to these smells. Our reactions are partly innate, but heavily shaped by our own personal experiences. We observe an experiment at the University of California in Los Angeles to see what happens in the brain when he smells a noxious scent and discovers the way we react to a smell reflects our past experiences of that smell – good or bad. To create the worst smell in the world, the team at Monell had to find a concoction that would trigger everyone’s worst smell memories. For the grand finale, we try out the ’stench soup’ developed by the team. He takes a tiny sniff of the weapons grade stink, and is convulsed with disgust. 2003 99
In the Womb Witness the incredible journey of a developing new life. From the moment of conception, every human embryo embarks on an incredible nine-month journey of development. Now, cutting-edge technology makes it possible for us to open a window into the hidden world of the fetus and explore each trimester in amazing new detail. Revolutionary 3D and 4D ultrasound imagery sheds light on the delicate, dark world of a fetus as never before and follows a rare fetoscope operation, performed in utero with the hope of correcting life threatening complications before birth. 2005 101
Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita puts a human face on this controversial subject. When neurologist Dr. Jack Kessler’s daughter injured her spine in a skiing accident… … he turned his energies toward finding a method to repair damaged spinal cords, re-focusing his research on developing a therapy using embryonic stem cells to regenerate the damaged parts of the nervous system. His research has taken him into a politically very sensitive area in which Catholic and fundamentalist Christian views about the beginning of life exert a powerful influence. Kessler uses his position to educate the public about the benefits of stem cell research through public speaking engagements and articles for the newspaper. In his work with two graduate students, Vicki and Vibhu, he guides them through a painstaking experiment on mice with spinal damage. In addition, during one of the weekly lab meetings with his students, Kessler discusses the religious objections and misunderstandings regarding stem cell research. His colleague, Dr. Laurie Zoloth, who shares in Kessler’s public education efforts, also delves into the moral and ethical questions surrounding the research in her classes on bioethics. The questions are difficult ones, involving different religious beliefs and the meaning of human suffering. 2007 205
Micro Cosmos – Le peuple de l’herbe Microcosmos captures the fun and adventure of a spectacular hidden universe revealed in a breathtaking, close-up view unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Your family will marvel at a pair of stag beetles dueling like titans. The kids will stare bug-eyed as a magnificent army of worker ants race to stock their larder … while trying to avoid becoming a feisty pheasant’s dinner. And you’ll have a front-row seat to witness an amazing transformation from caterpillar to butterfly, the remarkable birth of a mosquito, and several other minute miracles of life. With its tiny cast of thousands, MICROCOSMOS leaves no doubt that “Mother Nature remains the greatest special effects wizard of all” (New York Times). Microcosmos is one of the most startling movies ever made and its stars are the very creatures that we typically take for granted every day–mosquitoes, ants, dung beetles, snails, water spiders, and many others. Filmed in amazingly clear close-ups, Microcosmos takes us directly into the world of bugs with specially designed equipment that provides images unlike any you’ve ever seen before. These aren’t the typically blurry, narrow field-of-focus shots that you’ve seen in past documentaries. In Microcosmos, bugs tower over the camera like dinosaurs, teetering and lumbering into view like extras from the cast of Jurassic Park, giving us a peek into a world that we could scarcely imagine before, where ants drink like cattle from a pool of water and drops of rain explode like rounds of mortar fire, where a simple field of grass becomes a huge forest. 1996 99
Richard Dawkins: The Blind Watchmaker One of the earliest efforts from Richard Dawkins in his identification and attack on the rise of creationism with the rising star of the US fundamentalist Christian demographic. In the important documentary, Dawkins shows ways to easily refute some of the more common creationist arguments. Dawkins begins with the question, “Did everything in Creation fall together by chance or was there an intelligent designer like God?” He then looks at the spreading disaffection with Darwinism and argues that it should not be written off as a worn out declaration of scientific faith. Whilst this is an aging documentary, it was an important key step in the growing assertion of science as the ONLY paradigm worthy of consideration to a highly developed species. Richard Dawkins 2008 99
Richard Dawkins: Why Are We Here? In this short documentary, Richard Dawkins takes a look at the purpose of human existance and asks the earthshaking question. Why are we here? Pointing out that religious stories of human purpose fail miserably, Dawkins indicates that science may be able to offer a better explanation for human existence. Starting out with Darwin, he claims that Darwin’s theory of evolution may offer the only explanation for humanity’s raison d’état that we are likely to ever get. Many religious believers may claim that answers for our existence offered by evolution theory mean that humans are nothing special, that we are just another species of animal. They are, of course, correct in saying that we are just another animal species but this does not necessarily mean that are not special. Clearly humans are different from our animal brothers in that we have the ability to ask questions like why are we here. This also means, however, that with our ’specialness’ comes extraordinary responsibilities. This brilliant documentary helps clarify some of the arguments made by evolution and is in no way just more of the same from Dawkins. Richard Dawkins 2008 104
The Genius Sperm Bank In 1980, a Californian millionaire established a very exclusive foundation for biological determinism or, in other words – a sperm bank. In fact, Robert Graham’s scheme was straight out of a James Bond film. His ‘Repository for Germinal Choice’ was created with the express aim of creating a master race of exceptional individuals. It was housed – like all plutocratic supremacy ideas should be – deep inside a subterranean concrete bunker. However, the crowning glory of his Blofeld-like plan was that only scientific masterminds could donate. The crème de la crème, you might say – genius seed frozen in liquid nitrogen. Graham had made his fortune by developing shatterproof plastic spectacle lenses. In 1978, he sold his company, Armorlite, and focused on his real vision – keeping America great by selective breeding. Troubled by his dubious notion that poor “retrograde humans” were gradually diluting America’s gene pool, Graham vowed to do something about it. “Early in my life it dawned on me that bright, desirable citizens weren’t reproducing themselves,” Graham said, during a rare interview in 1983. “The local doctor had only one child, the banker had one child and the richest and most famous man in town was childless.” In fact, the inspiration for his super-sperm bank was 1946 Nobel prize-winning American geneticist, Hermann Muller. Muller had long advocated establishing sperm banks in which donations from brilliant men would be stored until after their deaths. The media and scientific fraternity rounded on Graham when he first went public with his repository. He was accused of trying to create a “master race.” BBC 2006 91
The Ghost in our Genes Our genes carry unbelievable information of our past. And it is this genetic information, that affects our present, because the only way forward is to look into the past. This documentary film explains genetic science and it’s impact on our future life. A gene is the basic unit of heredity in a living organism. The field of genetics predates modern molecular biology, but it is now known that all living things depend on DNA to pass on their traits to offspring. Genetics is a discipline of biology and the science of heredity and variation in living organisms. The fact that living things inherit traits from their parents has been used since prehistoric times to improve crop plants and animals through selective breeding. However, the modern science of genetics, which seeks to understand the process of inheritance, only began with the work of Gregor Mendel in the mid-nineteenth century. Although he did not know the physical basis for heredity, Mendel observed that organisms inherit traits in a discrete manner-these basic units of inheritance are now called genes. 2006 111
The Great Global Warming Swindle This is a documentary film that argues against the scientific consensus that global warming is “very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic (man-made) greenhouse gas concentrations”. It has been described by both its original broadcaster Channel 4 and the British regulator Ofcom as “a polemic”. The film, made by British television producer Martin Durkin, showcases scientists, economists, politicians, writers, and others who are sceptical about the scientific theory of anthropogenic global warming. The programme’s publicity materials assert that man-made global warming is “a lie” and “the biggest scam of modern times.” It’s original working title was “Apocalypse my arse”, but the title The Great Global Warming Swindle was later adopted as a reference to The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle, a mockumentary about British punk band The Sex Pistols. The UK’s Channel 4 premiered the documentary on 8 March 2007. The channel described the film as “a polemic that drew together the well-documented views of a number of respected scientists to reach the same conclusions. This is a controversial film but we feel that it is important that all sides of the debate are aired.” According to Hamish Mykura, Channel 4’s head of documentaries, the film was commissioned “to present the viewpoint of the small minority of scientists who do not believe global warming is caused by anthropogenic production of carbon dioxide.” 2007 120
The Gulf Stream and The Next Ice Age This documentary is about the consequences of global warming on “The Great Atlantic Conveyor”, which has to do with regulating climate and the fear that the melting of ice will stop it, perhaps triggering an ice age. “In the battle against climate change there is no enemy to fight, just our attitudes.” (Nicolas Koutsikas, Director, The Gulf Stream and The Next Ice Age) Climate Change is hot on the political and social agenda internationally. Our climate is changing, with industrial production, habitat, transport and everyday human activities acknowledged as causes of global warming. The Gulf Stream and the Next Ice Age is a one-hour documentary which explores the results of a recent American government report that believes the collapse of thermohaline circulation will take place around the year 2010 and impose a minor ice age on Europe. Could Dublin acquire a climate like Spitzberg, and London like that of Siberia? The Gulf Stream is a powerful surface current, driven by the Trade Winds. Its origins lie in the Gulf of Mexico and it carries the tropical waters from the Florida Strait to the great banks of the United States, where it heads eastward, carrying its warm waters to the borders of the North Atlantic. As soon as the tropical waters hit the Arctic Ocean, they cool abruptly and plunge towards the abyssal zone to form a loop, known as “thermohaline circulation.” Then, like an immense conveyor belt that slows down in the ocean depths, it sets out again southward to rejoin the beginning of the Gulf Stream. 2007 91

Unstoppable Solar Cycles Is global warming natural and unstoppable? The Earth’s climate is always warming or cooling. Like the weather, it is a dynamic system. The impact of these changes on our lives is significant and important. But also significant and important would be the cost of measures aimed at reducing human greenhouse gas emissions. It is important, therefore, to get the science right before raising taxes or adopting expensive government mandates. In this brief video, two leading climate scientists – Dr. David Legates and Dr. Willie Soon – explain why the current warming trend is probably natural – the result of solar cycles – and therefore is unstoppable. They point to evidence in Greenland – which was much warmer at the height of the last natural warming cycle that it is today – and elsewhere. Many other scientists support their views. This video is short, fast-moving, educational, and yet scientifically accurate. Share it with your family and friends, teachers, and civic or business leaders you might know. Let them know that global warming is natural…and unstoppable. 2008 114

9/11 and the British Broadcasting Conspiracy There is an abundance of scientific and forensic evidence to support alternative theories, yet the BBC and other mainstream news corporations have continued to dismiss this information as conspiracy theory. ‘The Conspiracy Files’ and the BBC in general have failed to objectively present the detail of this evidence. 9/11 and the British Broadcasting Conspiracy – new documentary by Adrian Connock and David Shayler about the BBC’s selective and distorted 9/11 coverage. Conspiracy of Silence Conspiracy of Silence”, a documentary listed for viewing in TV Guide Magazine was to be aired on the Discovery Channel, on May 3, 1994. This documentary exposed a network of religious leaders and Washington politicians who flew children to Washington D.C. for sex orgies. Many children suffered the indignity of wearing nothing but their underwear and a number displayed on a piece of cardboard hanging from their necks when being auctioned off to foreigners in Las Vegas, Nevada and Toronto, Canada. At the last minute before airing, unknown congressmen threatened the TV Cable industry with restrictive legislation if this documentary was aired 1994 150
Core of Corruption: In the Shadows Core of Corruption is a documentary film series which details a comprehensive investigation into clandestine intelligence operations and conspiracies. The project is surfacing exclusive whistle blowers, insiders and critical evidence for the very first time. Over 2,000 hours of credible network news clips have been surfaced for this ground breaking event, most of which have never been seen since they aired and have never been available on the internet. Some of the video news segments for this project, when requested from the networks, were denied access to and corporate representatives would say that the information sought does not exist or has been misplaced. Someone doesn’t want the public to see these stories, that when put together, establish a conspiracy of the magnitude that could change the way one views the world. Countless millions of people are being manipulated and lied to by a network of individuals within government that work on behalf of private interests. The individuals were involved in the terrorist attacks of September 11th. Many of those same figures are are connected to historical events that have shaped our understanding of government crime. For instance, the Iran Contra affair involved many figures that showed up in the 9/11 attacks 2008 108
Deconstructing The Myth Of AIDS In 1984 we were told that HIV was the cause of AIDS. In his provocative documentary film, “Deconstructing the Myth of AIDS,” Gary Null, Ph.D., challenges virtually every statement ever made by the American medical industrial complex on the virus - including those of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institute for Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Dust to Dust: The Health Effects of 9/11 Just days after September 11, 2001, the Environmental Protection Agency assured the public that there should be no concern about any health hazards associated with exposure to smoke and debris in lower Manhattan. This disturbing documentary asks whether the EPA’s pronouncement was based on science or politics. Now many of the first-responders who risked their lives within that toxic chemical soup are seriously ill or dying. Endgame: Blueprint for Global Enslavement Documentary filmmaker Alex Jones chronicles the history of the global elite's bloody rise to power and reveals how they have funded dictators and financed the bloodiest wars - creating order out of chaos to pave the way for the first true world empire. Jones and his film crew track the elusive Bilderberg Group to Ottawa and Istanbul to document their secret summits, allowing you to witness global kingpins setting the world's agenda and instigating World War III. This documentary contains eyeopening information about the formation of the North America transportation control grid, which will end U.S. sovereignty forever. Alex Jones 2007 108
Fall of the Republic: The Presidency of Barack Obama Fall Of The Republic documents how an offshore corporate cartel is bankrupting the US economy by design. Leaders are now declaring that world government has arrived and that the dollar will be replaced by a new global currency. President Obama has brazenly violated Article 1 Section 9 of the US Constitution by seating himself at the head of United Nations’ Security Council, thus becoming the first US president to chair the world body. A scientific dictatorship is in its final stages of completion, and laws protecting basic human rights are being abolished worldwide; an iron curtain of high-tech tyranny is now descending over the planet. A worldwide regime controlled by an unelected corporate elite is implementing a planetary carbon tax system that will dominate all human activity and establish a system of neo-feudal slavery. The image makers have carefully packaged Obama as the world’s savior; he is the Trojan Horse manufactured to pacify the people just long enough for the globalists to complete their master plan. This film reveals the architecture of the New World Order and what the power elite have in store for humanity. More importantly it communicates how We The People can retake control of our government, turn the criminal tide and bring the tyrants to justice. Alex Jones 2009 157

Manufacturing Consent This film showcases Noam Chomsky, one of America's leading linguists and political dissidents. It also illustrates his message of how government and big media businesses cooperate to produce an effective propaganda machine in order to manipulate the opinions of the United States populous. The key example for this analysis is the simultaneous events of the massive coverage of the communist atrocities of Khmer Rouge regime of Cambodia and the suppression of news of the US supported Indonesian invasion and subjugation of East Timor. Noam Chomsky 2006 122
National Security Alert In 2006 Citizen Investigation Team launched an independent investigation into the act of terrorism which took place at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. This exhaustive three-year inquest involved multiple trips to the scene of the crime in Arlington, Virginia, close scrutiny of all official and unofficial data related to the event, and, most importantly, first-person interviews with dozens of eyewitnesses, many of which were conducted and filmed in the exact locations from which they witnessed the plane that allegedly struck the building that day. Be forewarned: Our findings are extraordinarily shocking and frightening. They are also deadly serious, and deserving of your immediate attention. This is not about a conspiracy theory or any theory at all. This is about independent, verifiable evidence which unfortunately happens to conclusively establish as a historical fact that the violence which took place in Arlington that day was not the result of a surprise attack by suicide hijackers, but rather a false flag “black operation” involving a carefully planned and skillfully executed deception. 2009 106

The Ultimate Con The Ultimate Con is a 9/11 based documentary with no narration, no script, no conjecture. There are no “theories” put forth in this documentary, only facts, eyewitness testimony, news reports, interviews, and various other clips that are combined together to tell a story. The Ultimate Con is 100% free. It is not for sale in any retail outlet or book store anywhere. It is more important to get the word out to every single person possible while we still have the chance. This documentary is the very best documentary for people who are unfamiliar with the controversy surrounding 9/11, or people teetering on the edge of finding out the truth. The documentary was designed specially for those who still believe the “Official” story, to best wake them up using various media and news clips. 2007 115
Towers of Deception: The Media Cover-Up of 9/11 This is a great eyeopening documentary film. The left is far more infiltrated by actual paid agents of the FBI and the CIA, and the like, than most of us on the left are willing to think about seriously. The CIA…has virtually unlimited funds. It is above and beyond the law and it knows no moral constraints. It has no financial or moral or legal constraints to stop it from doing whatever it’s going to do. There’s a tremendously large number of CIA agents who are moles within the media. They occupy positions, high and low, throughout the newspaper, television, radio, and book publishing industries. A dozen carefully researched books have exposed the official story of 9/11 to be a terror fraud. Yet the mainstream media have monolithically failed to ask elementary questions about anomalies in this story. So-called alternative media have been little better. Towers of Deception explains why and prescribes actions to break out the truth. Barrie Zwicker 2007 92
Truth Rising Alex Jones’ 9/11 Chronicles Part One: Truth Rising is more than a rollercoaster adventure through the various expressions of the 9/11 truth movement, it pays homage to a form of direct activism that has corrupt politicians scuttling for cover across the country as their crimes are exposed in public. The film is a blueprint for unravelling the 9/11 cover-up and going on the offensive in the name of truth. Alex Jones 2008 78

A World Without Water If you've read anything about the global water crisis, you've likely read a quote from Dr. Peter Gleick, founder and president of the Pacific Institute, and one of the world's leading water experts. His name has become as ubiquitous as drought itself, which is suddenly making major headlines. A report from the World Economic Forum warned that in only twenty years our civilization may be facing "water bankruptcy"--shortfalls of fresh water so large and pervasive that global food production could crater, meaning that we'd lose the equivalent of the entire grain production of the US and India combined. 2006 195

Nutrition & Behavior by Dr Russell Blaylock In this lecture, Dr. Russell Blaylock explains one of the most important connections between nutrition and our health- how nutrition affects our behavior. Citing a series of important studies, he shows that good nutrition can powerfully enhance our memory, mood, and behavior in a socially desirable way. Like wise he shows us that poor nutrition can lead our youth into a world of violence, crime, depression and suicide. By using an impressive array of studies on both juvenile and adult prisoners, Dr. Blaylock demonstrates these principals and outlines specific measures you can take to protect your children from these detrimental effects. Most importantly, he shows us that it is never too late to make these nutritional changes. You can order this DVD at http://www.atavistik.com Dr. Russell Blaylock 2007 113

We examine the marketing and public relations efforts on behalf of the pharmaceutical companies, including sales reps, medical journals and conferences. Further, we look at alternatives to traditional pharmacology and drug therapy, such as vitamins and nutritional supplements, and why they are often perceived as a competitive threat to the drug manufacturers. Alternative therapies also include diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Prescription for Disaster takes you on a journey through the tangled web of big business, the way disease is treated today, and the consequences we suffer as a society. 2004 144

Kissinger's story raises profound questions about American foreign policy and highlights a new era of human rights. Increasing evidence about one man's role in a long history of human rights abuses leads to a critical examination of American diplomacy through the lens of international standards of justice. The film focuses mainly on Kissinger's role in America's secret bombing of Cambodia in 1969, the approval of Indonesia's genocidal assault on East Timor in 1975, the assassination of a Chilean general in 1970, and his involvement in the 1969 Paris peace talks concerning the Vietnam Conflict. 2002 120

The War on Democracy John Pilger's 2007 documentary explores the historic and current relationship of Washington with countries such as Venezuela, Bolivia and Chile. Pilger claims that the film "...tells a universal story... analyzing and revealing, through vivid testimony, the story of great power behind its venerable myths. It allows us to understand the true nature of the so-called "war on terror". According to Pilger, the film’s message is that the greed and power of empire is not invincible and that people power is always the "seed beneath the snow". John Pilger 2007 133

Vortex Based Mathematics Within, you will be taken on a spiraling tour through the toroidal roller coaster of our deterministic universe. Dark Matter, the vibratory essence of all that exists, is no longer on its elusive hide and seek trip -- it has been found! With the introduction of Vortex-Based Mathematics you will be able to see how energy is expressing itself mathematically. This math has no anomalies and shows the dimensional shape and function of the universe as being a toroid or donut-shaped black hole. This is the template for the universe and it is all within our base ten decimal system! You have entered a place where Numbers are Real and Alive not merely symbols for other things. You will discover that the relationships between numbers are not random or man-made but that numbers are actually elementary particles of which everything is composed. This lost knowledge was well known to our ancients and is now being uncovered for us today. Gradually you will come to see numbers in a simple yet profoundly perfect three-dimensional matrix grid pattern that forms the shape of a torus. The number grid reveals the calibration and timing for an engine that can take us throughout the universe and solve mankind's energy needs. Marko Rodin 2008 208
War Made Easy War Made Easy reaches into the Orwellian memory hole to expose a 50-year pattern of government deception and media spin that has dragged the United States into one war after another from Vietnam to Iraq. Narrated by actor and activist Sean Penn, the film exhumes remarkable archival footage of official distortion and exaggeration from LBJ to George W. Bush, revealing in stunning detail how the American news media have uncritically disseminated the pro-war messages of successive presidential administrations. 2007 116

How an Economy Grows and Why It Doesn't The main point of the book is that very simple principals are all that is needed to understand the overall workings of any sized economy. Economic theory is explained in the narrative of a series of approximately 300 comic frames. The setting is a tropical island where hunter/gatherer cavemen struggle daily to collect fish to eat. The concepts of risk, creation of capital assets, return, consumption, saving and borrowing are explained. The economy of the island becomes increasingly dynamic as the story goes on. Institutions develope to protect the islanders' savings and captial assets from theives and disasters. The concepts and purposes of government, public works projects, welfare, inflation are progressively treated in context of this island economy. Some people may not like the comic format but I think it would be difficult to explain the subject better or more concisely. Irwin Schiff 1985 172

Money, Banking And The Federal Reserve Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson understood "The Monster". But to most Americans today, Federal Reserve is just a name on the dollar bill. They have no idea of what the central bank does to the economy, or to their own economic lives; of how and why it was founded and operates; or of the sound money and banking that could end the statism, inflation, and business cycles that the Fed generates. 2006 118

Thai Brides Although presented in a fairly light-hearted format, it was very thought-provoking. Of course, to most of us the notion of these agencies is abhorrent to say the least. However, largely due to the style of presentation, it was quite revealing to listen to the viewpoints of the 'clients' and owners, who seemed to feel comfortable expressing their views. Louis Theroux' style, which does not at first appear overly challenging, allows a truer insight into a person's behaviour and makes him/her less defensive and consequently more candid. Nostradamus - Beyond The Prophecies Michel de Nostredame (December 14, 1503 – July 2, 1566), usually Latinized to Nostradamus, was a French apothecary and reputed seer who published collections of prophecies that have since become famous world-wide. He is best known for his book Les Propheties, the first edition of which appeared in 1555. Since the publication of this book, which has rarely been out of print since his death, Nostradamus has attracted an almost cult following. His many enthusiasts, as well as the popular press, credit him with predicting numerous major world events. In contrast, most of the academic sources listed below maintain that the associations made between world events and Nostradamus' quatrains are largely the result of misinterpretations or mistranslations (sometimes deliberate) or else are so tenuous as to render them useless as evidence of any genuine predictive power. Moreover, none of the sources listed offers any evidence that anyone has ever interpreted any of Nostradamus' quatrains specifically enough to allow a clear identification of any event in advance. 2001 116

The Iceman Confessions Of A Mafia Hitman Up Close and Personal with a Killer When I was finally admitted into the bowels of Trenton State Prison in New Jersey’s capital to interview multiple murderer Richard Kuklinski, a.k.a. “the Iceman,” it wasn’t at all what I had expected. My assumption was that it would be like the movies. We’d be separated by a shatter-proof glass barrier. We’d communicate through telephone handsets. There would be guards all around watching our every move. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. Clarice Starling had more protection when she visited Dr. Hannibal “the Cannibal” Lector in The Silence of the Lambs. At least she had bars. And frankly, as a killer, Lector was downright crude compared to the stealth and skullduggery of the Iceman. Lector liked to bite; Kuklinski preferred a cyanide solution administered from a nasal spray bottle. A surprise spritz to the face usually produced a shocked inhalation from the victim, who as a result would die in under a minute. 2002 113
The Lost Pyramids Of Caral The magnificent ancient city of pyramids at Caral in Peru hit the headlines in 2001. Boldly Go If humans are ever to reach deep space, there will need to be some revolutionary changes in transport. This episode explores the tools we would need in order to reach other stars, from the Voyager spacecraft (which would take about 25,000 years to reach the nearest star at its current speed), to plausible technologies like solar sailing (which could reduce the travel time to just a few decades), to the theoretically possible, practically impossible construction / manipulation of worm holes created by the death of stars (which, of course, would require we first come close to one...). We also hear an astronaut's account of the horrible experience that it is to be launched in a space rocket, a price which he believes is worth the reward of the peace and calmness of reaching orbit. 2008 133

Cryonics: Death in the Deep Freeze The first ever footage of a person being cryonically frozen is to be broadcast in a Channel Five documentary that will follow a woman who is terminally ill with cancer before and after her death. ... We're really very proud of what we have achieved with this programme - the human and emotional journey we captured with one contributor in particular, filming prior to her death and the subsequent process of her preservation, in conjunction with the amazing scientific and ethical questions raised by this subject, makes for one of our most challenging and fascinating productions to date." Filming was earlier this year, according the Alcor newsletter; I'm hoping this turns out to have more of a respectful positioning than the Guardian article suggests. One thing they all agree on is that the coming of this moment - and whatever it brings - is inevitable. 2006 161
Hunting the Hidden Dimension In 1978 at Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, engineers were designing experimental aircraft. A young computer scientist named Loren Carpenter was helping them visualize what the planes might look like in flight. He would get the data from them and make pictures from various angles, but he wanted to be able to put a mountain behind them. There was no way to do mountains on the computer because they consist of millions and millions of little polygons. Especially in those days computers were slower than those you have in your watch. 2008 135

It Runs on Water On Sunday, 17 December 1995, viewers in U.K. saw an hour-long T V. program which, at long last, puts across the clear message that "free energy" is on the way. In the opening stages Arthur C. Clarke explained how there were four stages in the way scientists react to the development of anything of a revolutionary nature. "Free energy" was now working its way through these four stages of reaction, which were: a: "It's nonsense," b: "It is not important," c: "I always said it was a good idea," and d: "I thought of it first." The scene moved to Rome, Georgia where Jim Griggs of Hydrodynamics, Inc. demonstrated the assembly and operation of a "hydrosonic water pump" which operated over-unity by producing hot water or steam with energy in excess of the electrical energy input to the pump motor. Stanley Meyer 2008 129
Mathematical Infinity and Human Destiny There are two approaches to mathematical infinity. It can be seen as defining limiting cases that can never be realized or as existing in some philosophical sense. These mathematical approaches parallel approaches to meaning and value that I call absolutist and evolutionary. The absolutist sees ultimate meaning as something that exists most commonly in the form of an all powerful infinite God. 2007 126

Richard Dawkins - TED Talks In this talk, titled, "Queerer Than We Suppose: The strangeness of science," he suggests that the true nature of the universe eludes us, because the human mind evolved only to understand the "middle-sized" world we can observe. Author of the landmark 1976 book, The Selfish Gene, he's a brilliant (and trenchant) evangelist for Darwin's ideas. Richard Dawkins 2002 143

Science Fiction, Science Fact Warp speed, transporters, wormholes and lasers – they are all staples of science fiction books, movies, and TV shows. But the fantastic world of tomorrow is quickly becoming the futuristic world of today. While you may not be “beaming” to your next appointment any time soon, researchers are preparing for the first tests of a present-day “transporter.” And while scientists have long mocked Hollywood’s visions of warp speed and faster-than-light travel as prohibited by Einstein’s laws, a new generation of physicists continues to rewrite the fundamental rules of the universe. Is there a way around the cosmic speed limit? Maybe … as long as you’re prepared to survive a journey through the ultra-high energies of one of the most violent places in the cosmos – the heart of a twisting, swirling vortex that leads either to strange, new worlds… or certain death. Next stop – the future… arriving today, as this documentary explores the worlds of science fiction and science fact. 2009 118

Capitalism: A Love Story Michael Moore's documentary, Capitalism: A Love Story, comes home to the issue he's been examining throughout his career: the disastrous impact of corporate dominance on the everyday lives of Americans (and by default, the rest of the world). But this time the culprit is much bigger than General Motors, and the crime scene far wider than Flint, Michigan. From Middle America, to the halls of power in Washington, to the global financial epicenter in Manhattan, Michael Moore will once again take film goers into uncharted territory. With both humor and outrage, Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story explores a taboo question: What is the price that America pays for its love of capitalism? Years ago, that love seemed so innocent. Today, however, the American dream is looking more like a nightmare as families pay the price with their jobs, their homes and their savings. Moore takes us into the homes of ordinary people whose lives have been turned upside down; and he goes looking for explanations in Washington, DC and elsewhere. What he finds are the all-too-familiar symptoms of a love affair gone astray: lies, abuse, betrayal...and 14,000 jobs being lost every day. Capitalism: A Love Story is both a culmination of Moore's previous works and a look into what a more hopeful future could look like. It is Michael Moore's ultimate quest to answer the question he's posed throughout his illustrious filmmaking career: Who are we and why do we behave the way that we do? Michael Moore 2009 155

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised Hugo Chavez, elected president of Venezuela in 1998, is a colorful, unpredictable folk hero, beloved by his nation's working class and a tough-as-nails, quixotic opponent to the power structure that would see him deposed. Two independent filmmakers were inside the presidential palace on April 11, 2002, when he was forcibly removed from office. They were also present 48 hours later when, remarkably, he returned to power amid cheering aides. Their film records what was probably history's shortest-lived coup d'état. Touching the Void The closer you are to death. The more you realize you are alive. Joe Simpson and Simon Yates set out to climb the west face of the Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. It was 1985 and the men were young, fit, skilled climbers. The west face, remote and treacherous, had not been climbed before. Following a successful three-and-a-half-day ascent, disaster struck. Simpson fell a short distance and broke several bones in his leg. With no hope of rescue, the men decided to attempt descent together with Yates lowering Simpson 300 feet at a time in a slow, painful process that could have potentially been deadly for both. One further misstep led to Yates unknowingly lowering his injured partner over the lip of a crevasse. With the gradient having gone from steep to vertical, he was no longer able to hold on. Certain they were about to be pulled jointly to their deaths, the only choice was to cut the rope. How Simpson survived the fall, and made it back to base camp is a story that will astound and inspire. In Touching the Void, Yates and Simpson return to the Siula Grande for the first time to retell their story. 2003 84
